WINTER SAFETY
1. During the winter it will be getting colder, the day will be getting shorter, and there will be rain. This change of the season will have real safety impacts when we’re at work.
2. When it rains we may find a leak somewhere in the building. If you find a leak:
1 If the leak is only a drip move a small container under it, such as a
trash can.
2 Place some high visibility cones around the spill so it is very visible to
traffic.
3 If necessary wipe up any water on the floor.
4 Report it immediately. Tell your supervisor, Maintenance, Property
Management, or Security so that it can be repaired.
3. Pay attention to how cold it is outside. Freezing temperatures do not need rain to create ice and a very slippery hazard outside. If it’s very cold outside pay attention as you walk. If you find ice in an area you walk report it to Security so they can treat it and make it safe for all.
4 After a long shift take time when starting up your car to prepare it. If there is ice or fog on the windshield take the time needed to let your defroster work.
5 If you have to work outside make sure to dress for the expected weather. Dress in layers so that you can stay warm when out in the cold and remove layers when coming back in.
6 If there is lightening outside come in from the storm until the hazard is gone.
7 A good storm could cause problems outside. Tree limbs can break and storm water drains can clog. Do not drive or walk through these problems. Report them immediately to Security.
8 With a shortened day we will have more night. A bright colored top can help drivers see you.
9 Wet conditions, icy roads, more darkness, and fog can all make driving conditions difficult. Drive slowly and stay alert in the parking lot.
10 Stay on designated walkways; do not take short cuts through dangerous areas (wet grass, wet rocks, and puddles).
